Soleil has severe OCD and has lived a sheltered, isolated life under a paranoid father who is convinced the world outside is full of paranormal danger. Every year he locks her indoors on Halloween. This year curiosity wins, and she sneaks out for her first Halloween.
In the spooky town of Weeping Vale she meets Jax, a handsome half-demon who only appears on Halloween night, when the boundary between worlds thins. A small rebellion turns into an evening of not-entirely-safe pranks, magic, and a fast-building romance, with dark creatures circling and midnight bearing down, because at midnight Jax gets pulled back to his own world. Over the course of the night the two of them work through their traumas, his the demon half he wants to be free of, hers the years of her father’s control, and the question the book builds toward is whether Jax can stay.
Character Development
Soleil is bright, and marked by her mental health and by panic attacks that her father’s overprotection keeps triggering. Across the night she moves toward her own independence, finding strength and a vulnerable openness in her relationship with Jax, and her internal conflict is about balancing that new autonomy against years of trauma. She is relatable because she is imperfect and brave enough to step out of her father’s shadow, and the arc from sheltered young woman to someone standing up to the supernatural is the heart of the book.
Jax is the mysterious half-demon, Soleil’s opposite, layered with charm and cockiness over a deep sadness. His turmoil comes from never fitting either world, and the more attached he gets to Soleil the more he opens up, though every scene is shadowed by how little time he has. His arc is about the need to be free and to love, even if only for a night. The supporting cast, Soleil’s obsessive ex Ben and her overprotective father, add tension and both stand as symbols of the control Soleil is trying to escape.
