On the Radar: Harley Laroux’s Souls Trilogy Ends in November

On the radar · Dark romance

One of the genre’s hardest-edged trilogies gets its ending on November 24.

Harley Laroux is closing the Souls Trilogy, and if the first two books are anything to go by, the third won’t be gentle.

The last book is called Soul of a Witch, and it follows Her Soul to Take and Her Soul for Revenge.

If you’ve read dark romance for any length of time, you already know the first two. They’re the ones people press on you when you say you want something that actually goes there. Demon summoning gone wrong, a cult, an occultist heroine who needs a weapon more than she needs rescuing. Laroux writes it as erotic horror as much as romance, and she has never treated the horror as set dressing.

That’s why the finale is worth flagging now. Two books have been building toward it, and this is where the story has to pay out.

She writes it as erotic horror as much as romance, and she has never treated the horror as set dressing.

A couple of practical notes. The special edition is a proper collector object: stencilled edges, a reversible dust jacket, a foil-stamped hardcover, designed endpapers. If you’re the kind of reader who buys the pretty printing, preorder it rather than hunt for it later.

The quieter detail is the publishing side. Laroux self-published this series to begin with. Now she’s with Kensington. That self-pub-to-trad path is turning into a well-worn one, and it’s a good sign for the genre. The big houses have finally worked out that the readers were here all along.

I haven’t seen an advance copy, so I can’t tell you how it ends or whether it lands. I’ll write up the full trilogy here as I get to it. For now, a question for everyone who’s already two books deep. Are you ready for how this one ends, or are you bracing?
