On the Radar: Icebreaker Lands a Straight-to-Series Order at Netflix

On the radar · Adaptations

Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker just landed a straight-to-series order at Netflix.

Another BookTok sports romance is heading to Netflix, and this one skipped the pilot stage entirely.

Deadline broke it back in June: Netflix ordered a full series of Icebreaker straight off the strength of the book, no pilot episode shot first to test the waters. Amanda Lasher is showrunning and writing, and Alex Cooper is executive producing through her Unwell Productions, alongside Matt Kaplan and Mina Lefevre. Filming starts October 2 in Vancouver and wraps February 17, so this one is actually moving, not just optioned and shelved.

If you haven’t read it, Icebreaker is Nate Hawkins and Anastasia Allen. He’s the hockey team captain, she’s a competitive figure skater, and a rink-scheduling mess at their university forces them to share ice time neither of them wants to share. It’s contemporary sports romance, enemies-to-lovers with a grumpy-sunshine streak, and it spent well over a year on the New York Times bestseller list. None of that is remotely dark, and I’ll say it plainly: this isn’t the genre I usually cover here.

This isn’t the genre I usually cover here, and I’m flagging it anyway. That’s the whole point of a radar post.

I’m flagging it because the pipeline from BookTok to screen keeps moving faster than it used to, and a straight-to-series order for this book is a real signal, not just industry noise. Netflix hasn’t set a release window yet, and with filming running into February 2027, don’t expect it to stream before late next year at the earliest.

Casting hasn’t been announced, which leaves the one genuinely fun part still open. Who are you picturing as Nate? Who’s your Anastasia? Tell me wherever you found this post, I’m curious what the fandom lands on before Netflix makes it official.
