Dark Romance Is the Only Subgenre Google Trends Calls Leading

I don’t usually lead a post with a spreadsheet, but this one earned it.

A new State of Romance market report went through more than 3,000 bestselling titles across 14 romance niches on Amazon, then lined each one up against Google Trends. Trends sorts search interest into tiers based on sustained growth, not a single spike, and the top bucket is called leading. Out of every romance subgenre the report tracked, exactly one landed there. Dark romance. Not romantasy, which everyone keeps telling me is having its moment. Not contemporary, not sports romance, not anything else on the list. Just the genre this blog is built around.

What “leading” actually means

I want to be straight about what that number is and isn’t. It doesn’t mean dark romance outsells every other subgenre, and it doesn’t mean it’s the biggest by raw volume. Leading is about trajectory, not size. It says more people are searching for it, more consistently, than for any other corner of romance right now. That’s a narrower claim than “dark romance won,” and it’s the more interesting one. A subgenre can be small and still be the one everyone’s heading toward.

What this doesn’t change

None of this changes what I actually do here. I’m still going to give you the full content warning list before I give you my opinion on the prose. I’m still going to tell you when a five-star rating is really about me and not about the book. The genre didn’t get less messy because a report likes it, and I’m not going to write it up like it did.

But I’ll admit the timing feels good. I started this blog because I was already reading two or three dark romance novels a week, and it seemed strange not to be writing about the thing eating my evenings anyway. I didn’t need a market report to justify that. I’ll still take the confirmation.
