Dark Romance Has Its Own Festival Circuit Now

I went looking for one piece of festival news and came back with a whole circuit.

The headline is simple. Montesilvano, Italy hosted a dedicated Dark Romance Festival on August 29, an event built entirely around this genre, not tucked into a general romance con as a side track. That alone would be worth a post. But when I started checking what else was already running, the festival turned out to be one stop among several, not a novelty.

Bookstore Romance Day ran August 15 across indie stores nationwide in the US. RomantiConn happened in Connecticut in July. Rebels & Realms, an 18+ event, ran in Arkansas the same month. Sinners & Stardust took Boston in August. Later this year, Romantasy BookCon lands in Orlando October 22 through 24, and Fables & Flames, another 18+ gathering, closes out the year in Minneapolis November 6 through 8.

None of these are massive, industry-wide cons the way general romance events sometimes are. They’re regional, several of them explicitly adults-only, and they’re multiplying without much mainstream coverage. That’s usually what it looks like when a genre stops being a subculture and starts being an actual market. Conventions don’t get built for niches nobody shows up for.

I don’t know yet whether any of these will still exist in five years, and I’m not going to pretend a festival circuit is the same thing as literary respect. But it does mean there’s now a real answer for readers who want to do more than order a book and read it alone at 2am. There’s somewhere to go.
