Allie is a refreshing urban fantasy lead: sarcastic, tough, extremely independent, and with no problem getting her hands dirty to get a job done. The looming expiration of her angelic contract raises the stakes on her demon-hunting, and hints of a hidden family history keep the reader curious. The romance stays on simmer while angelic assassins circle, which turns it into a genuine slow burn rather than a distraction.
The mystery man arrives with ties to the supernatural community and a kind of magic that puts a target on his back, which is most of what defines him early on. The wider world, angels moving among humans alongside demons, is sketched with enough of a power play and an uneasy truce between the two sides to give Allie’s story a solid backdrop.

The book runs on the idea of a debt coming due: a bargain made by a teenager who had no real idea what she was signing, and the cost of it landing years later. Family secrets and a buried history give Allie a second clock to race, and the truce between angels and demons keeps the question of who the real monsters are in play.
